Kalemişi (a combination of etching, engraving and relief printing) is one of the classical Turkish arts forms originated in Uighur Turks and is an important branch of art with its own rules and wide application areas.

The earliest examples are found in Gaochang and Bezeklik caves of Central Asia. Due to external factors and damage caused by unconscious renewal, very few original samples belonging to the ancient periods remained today. Technically, after the designs etched on semi-permeable paper, the design is punctured with pins and transferred on to the walls with a sack filled with coal dust, and finally they are applied with the help of various paints and brushes. The person who carries out the kalemişi is called Kalemkâr, and the person who carries out the design is called Nakkaş.

Since kalemişi is an art from which is more in sight, it has become an inspiration for other art forms. Some people and craftsmen who do not know kalemişi describe this art as the rough form of gilding, which is very wrong. Neither the gilding is the lesser form of kalemişi, nor kalemişi işi is the rougher or better form of gilding. Kalemişi is one of our art forms that contains its own rules.

It is certain that the competition of Future Masters will be instrumental in making this art more widespread.
